I defended my doctoral dissertation “The European Constitution and the Eurozone Crisis: A Critique of European Constitutional Pluralism” in November 2017. In the study, I sought to combine two topical discussions in European constitutionalism: the substantive discussion on the Eurozone crisis and the theoretical discussion on constitutional pluralism. In practice, I studied two things. First, what types of legal reactions the European Union took to combat the financial and debt crisis that erupted in 2008. Second, how EU law, specifically the crisis response measures, are subjected to judicial review in the Member States, what types of differences there are in such national procedures, and what significance these measures have for the EU as supranational polity.
My current work focuses on the following topics:
European constitutionalism: How the Member States’ constitutional orders interact with the European Union’s constitutional order; specifically how the interplay between law and politics is played out in this multi-level polity.
Economic and Monetary Union: How the Economic and Monetary Union keeps developing and how these developments affect the Member States.
Legal theoretical approaches to the study of the EU: How legal theoretical and philosophical approaches, that combine elements of legal research and social sciences more generally speaking, provide insights into the study of the EU and our understanding of the Union. For example, I have been interested in understanding the philosophical foundations of neoliberalism and its effects on EU law.
My work has been published in top journals such as the Common Market Law Review and the European Law Review. I have been a visiting researcher at the Amsterdam Centre for Law and Governance (Amsterdam), the European University Institute (Florence) and the Europa Institute (Leiden). I have delivered expert opinions to the Finnish Parliament’s Constitutional Law Committee on issues related to the development of the Economic and Monetary Union.
I am available for consultations and interviews relating to the Economic and Monetary Union, constitutional aspects of EU law, and the effects of EU membership on the Finnish Constitution.
