Valikoima vessaviisautta Valsalta

Research output: Artistic and non-textual formExhibitionSolo art production

In summer 2016, the cultural house Valistustalo called ”Valsa”, situated in Rovaniemi at Valtakatu 19 and designed by Onni J. Ermala, was demolished. An apartment building has been built over its ruins.

Seija Ulkuniemi’ project respects the memory of Valsa. During the years 2012-14 she collected from the women’s toilets of Valsa – at those days called Tivoli – numerous enlightening wall writings. She recomposed and drew these texts as cross-stiches on mainly inherited clothes to create catechisms.

The project has been on display during the years 2017-18 in four parts, according to the time when the voluntary participants have got the cross-stitching ready. The first part was exhibited in Gallery Napa in the end of 2017, and later in the summer 2018 in Gallery of Sampo-centre, from where Wihuri foundation bought it to its collections.

The cross-stitching of the works on display has been time-consuming. The list of works includes the names of the people who have done the cross-stitching.

You may quiet down for a moment for the memory of Valsa and make a stop to cross-stich some text of the cloth provided (”Preserve cultural heritage. Save Valsa! Exactly!) for example just one letter. Use 2-3 wire threads. You can ask for more yarn from the worker of the cafteria. Please write your name in the participant list beside the letter you have made. – You are also welcome to give feedback in the little booklet.

The works are on sale. You can make an offer of the works (tel. + 358 40 4844143). Ulkuniemi will give half of the profit to Women’s Bank.
