Arctic Pedagogy II, the Sámi Education Digital Network Project

Project: Co-funded project

Collaborative partners

Description in the public portal

With a legislative reform of vocational training, there is a need to develop cooperation between the education organisations and working life and the technical tools for this, and to develop tools for identifying the skill of the students – attained and lacking – to individualise their studies. There is also a need for the competence and the culturally sensitive approach required by the productisation of tourism from the point of view of Sámi culture. Environments that enable independent studies are also needed in various fields and for facilitating transfers between school forms. In Sámi education, there is a need for a common development platform for learning and digital materials, and a supportive network of teaching staff and those working on educational material. The goal of working as part of a network is to support, for example, the implementation of the curriculum of basic education and to improve, through the cooperation created, the situation concerning education material in Sámi education.

During the Arctic Pedagogy I -project, we have looked at a game approach and the additional value it brings to teaching. The knowledge and understanding of the game approach attained has given rise to a need for and interest in enhancing the use of the game approach in both contact instruction and distance learning in the Sámi Area. The Arctic Pedagogy II -project will have a look at programming and robotics and how they can be dealt with and benefited from in teaching in basic and vocational education.

The goal of the project is:
1) to promote the networking of the target groups using remote communication and digital systems;
2) to enhance the digital competence and the fluent use of digital platforms – for example, production and distribution platforms – of the target groups;
3) to support the target groups in carrying out instruction and education in accordance with the curricula and the implementation and evaluation plans of vocational training by enhancing their skill in technology and new institutional practices, and
4) to create a model for how to provide Sámi cultural education for various target groups with the help of digitalisation.

As a result of the project, a pedagogy that uses new digital technology is used in the Sámi Area with a focus on Sámi languages and cultures and learning. The multiliteracy and digital skill of the teachers and students
improve, and cooperation with universities strengten. Through the project, a pedagogical education model is created, which enables students to pass cultural studies independently and flexibly, using diverse digital tools. We have more established cooperation with employers, and, in learning processes, we use methods that promote employment and entrepreneurship. We also develop new ways of working in the field of network cooperation between the communities and organisations dealing with Sámi culture and language in the area.
